Where there is room, a climber ropes onto the trunk and takes it down from the top in short, controlled sections, lowering each one so nothing lands on the roof or the garden. Where there is not, the crown and trunk are cut and lifted out over the house on the hiab. Either way, the palm comes out in pieces we can control, never in one fall.
Every job finishes with a clean-up. Palm fronds and trunk are stringy and fibrous and do not chip like normal wood, so we load them up and cart them away rather than leaving you a pile to deal with. If you want the stump gone too, we grind it out as part of the same visit.

What Palm Removal Costs in Whangarei
Every palm is priced on its own, because two palms of the same height can be very different jobs. These are the things that actually move the price, so you know what we are looking at when we quote:
- Height and species. A tall phoenix palm with a heavy, spiny crown is a bigger job than a slim king palm of the same height.
- What is underneath it. A palm over open lawn can be dropped in sections. One leaning over a roof, a pool or a glasshouse has to be lowered piece by piece or craned out.
- Access. Whether the truck and hiab can get close, or everything has to be carried out by hand down a side path or up a bank.
- Power lines. A palm within reach of lines can need the lines company involved before we start, which affects timing.
- How many. Once the crew and gear are on site, each extra palm costs a lot less than the first.
- The stump. Cut low and left, or ground out below ground level so you can lawn or plant over it.

Palm Removal in Whangarei: Common Questions
The questions we get asked most often when we are standing under someone's palm.
Will the palm grow back after it is cut down?
A single-trunk palm will not. Palms grow from one bud at the top of the trunk, so once that is cut the palm is dead and the stump cannot sprout the way a gum or a willow does. Clumping palms that send up several stems from the base are different: any stem left behind can keep growing, so we take every stem and grind the base out. Seedlings from dropped seed heads are the other thing to watch, especially under king palms.
Do I need to have the palm stump ground out?
Not always. Because a single-trunk palm stump does not regrow, cutting it off at ground level is fine if you are happy to leave it. A palm stump is fibrous, though, and it breaks down slowly, so if you want to lawn, plant, pave or build over the spot we grind it out below ground level. The root mass of a palm is a dense ball of thin roots rather than a few big spreading ones, which makes it a quick grind.
How do you remove a palm that is right next to the house?
From the top down, in pieces. A climber ropes onto the trunk, takes the fronds and seed heads off first, then cuts the trunk in short sections and lowers each one on a rope so it lands where we want it. Where there is no safe drop zone at all, we cut and lift the crown and trunk out over the house with the hiab. The palm never comes down in one fall next to a building.
Do I need council consent to remove a palm in Whangarei?
Usually not. Most palms on private property can be removed without any consent. A small number of trees in the district are scheduled as notable trees in the Whangarei District Council district plan, and those do need consent to remove, as can trees in some protected areas. If we think a palm might be one of them, we will tell you before anything is cut.
What happens to the fronds and the trunk?
We take them away. Palm fronds and trunks are stringy and fibrous, they do not chip like ordinary wood, and they take years to break down in a garden, so they are loaded onto the truck and removed as part of the job. If you want a few trunk rounds left behind for the garden, just ask.
